• Sweden is known for it’s excellent pop music, but did you know it’s the home to a burgeoning fashion industry? Kim Cesarion, the classically trained R&B pop singer, talked to us about his love of suits, the fresh and clean fashion in Stockholm and how to properly accessorize the lapel of a man’s suit.

“I like them suits,” Cesarion says with a smile, before he shows us his Tiger of Sweden slim-cut flannel suit, accessorized with suspenders in matching blue but clashing patterns.

“I’m not the dude who sits and checks everything out in magazines. I dress in what I feel comfortable in,” Cesarion says, echoing the style sentiments of most men. “Sometimes it’s suits, sometimes it can be completely different.”

He names Pharrell Williams as a style icon worth watching, calling him, “inspiring [because] he don’t care” and saying the two “probably have the same mentality” about fashion — he admires Pharrell’s chutzpah in dressing just how he wants to dress, without taking the opinions of everyone else into account.

As a citizen of Stockholm, he’s a big fan of homegrown fashion, telling us that Swedish stores specialize in sturdy basics, made well and with excellent materials. He goes so far as to say that even when he’s on tour, if he comes across a shop with good looking basics, he’ll probably forgo shopping there in favor of picking a similar item up back in his home city.

“Fashion is just a different way to express things, you know?” Cesarion says. “You have music, you have lyrics, you have melodies, you have a way of singing or rapping and I think fashion and how you dress is another [outlet].”

It’s been building buzz for the past few seasons, but the ’90s revival, led by New York designers such as Alexander Wang, has kicked into full swing this autumn. You’ll find the sartorial legacies of Generation X everywhere in Manhattan, on the runway and on our very own UC Berkeley campus. Students have fallen for retro pieces such as light-washed denim, minimalist sportswear, Birkenstocks, sandals and trainers. Take a look at how UC Berkeley kids are getting on the ’90s throwback train and other kinds of fashion inspiration on this week’s Fashion Fridays.

  • Friday signals the end of individual designer shows at World MasterCard fashion week, wrapping up with Huntress, Brit Watcher, Mikhael Kale, HD Homme, Stephan Caras, Madame Moje and Mikael D.

From the HD Homme Spring 2015 collection.

We look back at the 30 shows over the past five days and take note of styles, colours and fabrics on repeat. Here’s a cheat sheet to keeping up with fashion next season so you can plan your wardrobe now:

    Go bold

Bold colours are on trend, just what you may need after a long, cold winter. Lines like Bustle, Hayley Elsaesser and Soia and Kyo offer a rainbow of hues to choose from. If you’re looking for specifics, choose burgundy, royal blue or oranges (peach and coral included) as seen in looks by BLAK.I, Rachel Sin and Malorie Urbanovitch.

    Cutout styles

Flashes of skin will carry through to next year, if you take the collections by designers Sid Neigum, Mackage and Caitlin Power into account. Standouts: The royal blue leather leggings at the Mackage show with slits at the knee; the teal, white and black colour-blocked dress at Caitlin Power with a triangle cutout at the sternum and the all-over cutouts on Sid Neigum’s dresses.

    Crop tops

Designers Beaufille showed burgundy leather crop tops, but they weren’t the only collection to do so. Mikhael Kale also offered up a crop top paired with a long skirt, both covered in shiny coral beads.

    Jumpsuits

From accessible fashion to high fashion, jumpsuits assimilated into many collections. During the Target’s show, they were shown in plain black, covered in lace. At Pink Tartan, designer Kimberley Newport-Mimran used a patterned jumpsuit with wide leg pants to emphasize her sexy, 70s-inspired theme. At the Stephan Caras show, shimmery gold and white jumpsuits rocked the runway.

  • “Peculiar, progressive, intermixture” is how Pieter Burger and Carla Roos of WAKE summed up their Autumn/Winter 2015 collection prior to showing it at SA Fashion Week (SAFW). Since then, they can now add another word to the list: award-winning.

The young Jo’burg duo (pictured above), who won the SAFW Renault New Talent Search competition last week, say their interest in fashion was sparked by “the idea of creating something someone can wear”.

And it was, in part, the wearability of their collection – which featured a tactile mix of responsibly-sourced hides and black and white prints – that impressed Sunday Times Fashion Weekly Editior Tiaan Nagel.

“WAKE’s designs hit the perfect balance between being conceptual and being commercial,” says Nagel, who sat on the competition’s judging panel.

“It's currently extremely difficult for any designer to make a decent living in South Africa, and so to not consider the viability of their designs would be short sighted,” Nagel continues. “Designers can’t afford to indulge purely in the editorial or artistic aspect of clothing design, or on the other hand, focus solely on the retail success of a product.

“Wake considered both aspects: they didn’t compromise their artistic expression, yet still explored the reality of their product in context of the local market.”

  • Susie Lau has travelled the world with her style blog. An arbiter of taste and champion of new talent, she picks her favourite new designers from China.

There’s more to fashion in China than the conspicuous consumption of Western luxury brands: the country also develops, nurtures and exports its own exciting creative talent. In part two of our series on Chinese fashion, Susie Lau presents her choices of some of the most exciting and innovative designers on the scene.

    Anais Mak

    Fashion & Style

This young Hong Kong designer is known for her cheeky, boyish take on womenswear. After studying fashion design at the Studio Berçot in Paris, she set up her label Jourden, which now shows its collections in the city’s fashion weeks.

    Masha Ma

Masha Ma was born in Beijing, studied in London – where she also worked an assistant to Alexander McQueen – and now divides her time between Paris and Shanghai. Her most recent show at Paris Fashion Week featured a witty take on an item often seen in China’s polluted big cities but seldom on the catwalk: the disposable face mask.

    Min Wu

Min Wu graduated from the London College of Fashion in 2013 with an innovative collection that incorporated futuristic design with sculptural elements. She is just beginning her career but has already featured in shoots in the Chinese and UK fashion press, establishing herself as one to watch.

    Ms Min

Many Chinese fashion designers who find international success base themselves abroad – but not Min Liu, the designer behind Ms Min. After studying and working in Europe (including a stint at Viktor & Rolf in Amsterdam) she set up her brand in the south-eastern city of Xiamen
