While those of us on this side of the equator are bracing ourselves for snow, the fashion set is enjoying the warmth and sunlight of São Paolo. This past week, Brazilian designers—along with Donatella Versace and Stella McCartney (who both launched exclusive lines for department stores in Brazil)—showed their winter 2015 collections as part of São Paolo fashion week. As you can imagine, things are a bit brighter and lighter when it comes to dressing for winter in Brazil. The same can be said of the hair and makeup on the runways. In fact, here are three superfun beauty looks that you should Pin now and save for spring—or just go ahead and try them now and pretend that we're not all about to freeze our asses off for the next few months.

At 2nd Floor (shown above), lids were covered in an iridescent, ballerina-pink shadow that reminded me of the shimmer that makeup artist Pat McGrath used at Versace this season. The Brazilian version, however, included rosy-pink cheeks and lips that felt more fun and girlie than tough and fashion-y.

It's not really fashion week unless some sort of braid comes down the runway. At Teca por Helo Rocha, the braids were tight and slick and totally cool. Not every model had the same exact style—some had two, some had one—but each French braid was done using the same technique. Instead of crossing strands over one another, hairstylists wove them underneath, creating what I like to call an inside-out French braid.

Pink was the biggest makeup trend in New York, London, Milan, and Paris, so it's no surprise that the shade made an appearance in São Paolo. My favorite version was at Ellus, where makeup artists traced hot-pink liner along the top lashes, starting at the middle of the lash line and stopping at the outer corner. Lids were covered in a sooty-gray shadow, tempering the girlie shade and giving it a badass edge.

A Beautiful Me hosted their 4th Annual Avante Garde Hair Show fundraiser. Nearly 25 girls took the runway.

"A Beautiful Me is a program for young girls in 5th and 6th grade to build self-esteem," said Julie Maryon, A Beautiful Me mentor. "We hold workshops where we have the girls do esteem-building projects, like creating a dream board and this fundraiser supports that."

The money from the fundraiser goes directly to A Beautiful Me and helps the organization provide the esteem building workshops to girls for free.

"This fashion show is different," Maryon said. "It shows every woman being models, showing girls that anyone can do anything."

  • China Fashion Week ended on Nov. 2, recognizing leading Beijing designers with Gioia Pan receiving the Top Award, the highest fashion design award in China, according to Women of China.

Hailing from east China's Taiwan Province, Pan is also dubbed the "Kitting Queen."

Aside from the Top Award, other recognitions were also awarded, including Best Fashion Commentator, Best Fashion Photographer, Top Ten Fashion Designers, Top Ten Brands and Top Ten Fashion Models.

Among the recognized models were Li Weiyu and Hao Yunxiang, who was named the Best Fashion Model.

Opening on Oct. 25 in Beijing, the 2015 S/S China Fashion Week showcased 66 new styles for the 2015 spring and summer collections, which included 63 special fashion shows and three professional contests.

According to the China Fashion Week Organizing Committee, 44 of the 68 Chinese fashion designers and 15 foreign designers who attended the event were first-timers. Also, 110 new designers took part in the fashion show.

Both Chinese and foreign companies supported the fashion week with 88 designer brands releasing their latest collections. This accounts for a 33-percent increase in participation from the previous session.

Throughout the nine-day event, 22 brands from Korea, Japan, Italy, Britain, Russia and Denmark held fashion shows.

In collaboration with Chinese online superstore dangdang.com, the China Fashion Association also launched a new commercial platform called DHUB, which aims to support young designers and promote the marketing of designs.

Another highlight of the China Fashion Week was a new fashion trend by the QIAODAN Yin Peng Sports Wear Collection featuring a variety of designer respiratory face masks exhibited by models as they strutted down the catwalk, Think Progress reported.

The items are similar to the high-fashion face masks displayed at the 2014 Paris Fashion Week by Chinese designer Masha Ma.

  • The worlds of law and fashion seem disparate. One does not think about the legal workings of the industry while pinching pennies for a Chanel purse. It is in the courts, however, that the direction of the multi-billion dollar industry is determined. The Oct. 24 legal decision on famed designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana piqued interest into the judicial side of the world’s chicest profession.

Barbara Kolsun, executive vice president at renowned shoe company Stuart Weitzman and NYU adjunct professor on fashion law, said legal issues related to the industry vary from case to case. In recent years, there has been the current hotbed case of  Christian Louboutin’s long battle over its unmistakable red-bottom shoes and Gucci suing Guess over use of the iconic interlocking ‘G’ logo.

With regard to what can and cannot be protected, Kolsun explained the distinction in U.S. law, stating the different forms of law and patent.

    RELATED: Fashion & Style

“In the U.S. we basically have copyright law, trademark law and design patents,” Kolsun said.

Kolsun said the design of a garment is unprotectable, and noted that because of the numerous global companies in the industry, protection is dealt with based on where that company is working. She also mentioned the controversy over whether the fashion industry would benefit from a law protecting design.

“My opinion on that is that if we’re going to do it, it’s probably best to have a scheme — like Europe has — to protect designs rather than lobbing it onto the copyright law,” Kolsun said. “That is certainly something that’s been in discussion for a really long time.”

NYU Law assisting professor Charles Colman highlighted the most common legal issues in the industry today.

“When it comes to fashion-specific issues, we see a lot of uncertainty in the area of intellectual property law,” Colman said. “Specifically in the areas of design-patent law — which was not heavily used for many years, but has experienced a resurgence in recent years — trademark law’s treatment of ‘gray goods’ — goods that were authorized for sale in one jurisdiction, then imported into another and sold there — and, of course, perennial difficulties in applying copyright protection to works of fashion design.”

Colman is concerned about and has written extensively on the abuse of trademark law and the limitations of copyright and patent protection for fashion design.

“I think Congress, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the courts should crack down on this abuse by refusing to let fashion companies monopolize basic design elements through the Lanham Act — governing federal trademark law,” Colman said.

As fashions shifted into a new gear for fall, Rachel Simmons was watching closely.

Here now were slouchy, too-big sweaters, over-the-knee skirts, gym-inspired tops and track pants, and leather everything. Animal images and miles of zippers popped up on the Internet and in magazines and stores.

Simmons, of Kansas City, made a decision: She chose a black A-line midi-skirt as her one wardrobe update. She found it in faux leather for $119 on Piperlime.com.

The process is her way of getting the most for her money. She leans toward a classic, modern style with a preference for quality over the “very trendy.” And she has the patience to find the right price.

“Sooner or later, almost everything goes on sale,” says Simmons, a brand communications manager for energy company Brightergy.

How do you track fashion of the moment when your budget doesn’t match designer prices? It may take research, a good sense of your personal style and, well, patience.

Lisa Rodriguez, of Kansas City, likes to make the rounds of her favorite retailers. One day she swings by Marshalls, a discounter. Another time it’s Fashionista Exchange, an Overland Park secondhand store. She may score a $15 dress, a $16 top or a great vintage hat. Sometimes she shops in her parents’ closets, where she has found the likes of a wide ’80s-era silver metal belt.

She likes styles that are quirky, she says, and colorful. And she loves, loves, loves hats. Sales are not for her.

“You might wind up buying something just because it is on sale,” she says.

Hoping to work in journalism, she is an apprentice with KCPT and a waitress at Le Fou Frog restaurant.

Some other ideas to help you stay within your budget:

    ▪ Martha Immenschuh, a stylish Fairway woman known for creative mixes of high and low couture, recommends starting with research: Scan magazines. Visit retailers that carry pricey designer looks. Look over the high-end website Pret-a-Porter.com. Examine the clothes for style and workmanship, she says.

Then check sources known for designer copies, and in today’s fast-moving, fast-fashion world you’ll find those early in the season. Those could include Target, T.J. Maxx, Forever 21 and H&M. One popular retailer among the chic is the Spanish-owned Zara, with stores in New York and Chicago and, more important for the rest of us, Zara.com.

“They run a little small, so buy a size up,” Immenschuh says.

This season, good priority choices could be soft leather or faux leather pants that go with everything, a sweater decked with an animal image, anything with fringe or even a pretty go-with-everything scarf.

    ▪ Roseanne Morrison, fashion director of New York retail consulting firm Doneger Group, says current top sellers include track pants, oversized sweaters and coats, and the color wine. If you can afford one thing, she suggests a longer midcalf-length skirt with a soft feminine feeling.

    ▪ Stylist Heather Kraft, a personal shopper at Nordstrom in Oak Park Mall, thinks outside the conventional box for shopping sources. A small size 2 or 0, she may find something in the children’s department. And she stretches her wardrobe from warm weather to cool by adding pieces. A turtleneck sweater goes under a summer print dress, for example. A denim jacket or big scarf is a handy addition.

    ▪ Budget Fashionista (thebudgetfashionista.com) suggests you consider cost per wearing of a garment. If you wear something three times and you paid $150, that is $50 each time, relatively expensive. If you wear it every week for 10 weeks, it’s a bargain.

At least 70 percent of your wardrobe should be classic, the site advises, and then you can indulge in what’s trendy. And finally, good fit is a must. Try your dry cleaners if you don’t know a good tailor.

    ▪ French women, who seem to have style in their DNA, have a trick. If your budget is limited, put your money in one good item that you wear close your face, where it will be noticed. Cheaper pants or skirts are background.

    ▪ The trend to athletic looks offers opportunities for bargain shopping. Look for gym or track pants among the workout clothes. Sneakers that are so popular now for almost any occasion can be found at all prices. They may be reminiscent of the ’80s, when city women walked to work in running shoes with their dress heels in a tote. But now these shoes look especially smart with skinny pants and even dresses.

Times change. Staying up-to-date is part of the fun.

Heavy metal: The zipper is a trendy touch snaking across a boxy tweed knit sweater. $65, Frankie & Jules in Overland Park.

The long view: Simply Vera’s silky, pleated print over-the-knee skirt and color-coordinated cardigan pair smartly with Rewind’s lacy sweater and a camisole from Apt. 9. Skirt, $54; cardigan, $64; sweater, $48; camisole, $18; pendant, $18; bracelet, $44; boots, $79.99; all from Kohl’s.

Down to earth: Sneakers are found everywhere and go with everything these days. These are by Superga; $60, Banana Republic.
